The Story Behind Visit Newcastle

Meet Alex Hunter and the mission to share the real Newcastle upon Tyne.

Alex Hunter

Hi, I'm Alex.

I moved to Newcastle over 15 years ago, and I'll be honest: I didn't expect to fall in love with the city as deeply as I did. I came for a job, but I stayed for the spirit.

There's a unique energy here that you won't find anywhere else in the UK. It's in the way the morning light hits the Tyne Bridge, the creative buzz in the Ouseburn Valley, and the unmatched warmth of the Geordie people.

Why I Started This Guide

For years, I saw travel guides and "Top 10" lists for Newcastle that only scratched the surface. They mentioned the obvious spots but missed the soul of the cityโ€”the hidden pubs, the quiet Jesmond Dene walks, and the best street food in the Grainger Market.

I started Visit Newcastle as a personal project to document my own discoveries. I wanted to create a resource that felt like getting advice from a friend who actually lives here. Today, it has grown into a comprehensive guide, but the mission remains the same: to help you see Newcastle through the eyes of a local.

Independent & Honest

We aren't a big travel agency. Every recommendation comes from genuine experience. If a place is great, we'll tell you. If it's a tourist trap, we'll help you avoid it.

Beyond the Surface

We go deep. Whether it's a guide to the Metro or an exploration of Roman heritage, we provide the context that makes a trip meaningful.

Our Commitment to the North East

Newcastle and the wider North East are often overlooked, but I believe this region is one of the most exciting travel destinations in Europe. From the rugged beauty of the Northumberland coast to our industrial-turned-cultural powerhouse of a city, there is so much to explore.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Whether you're visiting for a weekend or planning a move, I hope these guides help you fall in love with Newcastle just as I have.
